Global Warming and Why We Must Save the Planet
Hello there Earth Moran,
Let me ask you this question, suppose you work at the International
Space Station and one day as you enjoy viewing one of the sunsets on Earth, a huge asteroid
come from nowhere hitting the planet, sending it spinning into the sun, where
would you go?
Of course, you would be homeless and possibly die once the
Space Station can no longer support your life. Okay, the probability of that happening
is almost zero, but you get what am getting into, right? We only have one home,
the Earth, and if we destroy it, we would have nowhere to call home.
In fact we will die with the planet and just like that human life will become extinct. So you get it, no one wants to think of the possibility
of human extinction. However, the truth is, if we do not change our ways of
life, then the possibility of making the planet inhabitable to us becomes more
real.
It is for this reason that we must join the likes of Greta Thunberg,
the sixteen-year-old Swedish climate activist, in pushing governments across
the world to adopt policies that will serve to conserve and protect the planet
from destructive activities such as pollution and deforestation.
Global Warming
Currently, the major threat to human life on this planet is
global warming which is a product of human caused pollution. According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) global warming is
a consequence of increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which
have served to trap heat from the sun from escaping into the outer space
resulting in increasing global temperature heating up the planet in the
process.
Adapted from St Albans City and District Council, Civic Centre,
Global warming is thus directly caused by human activities such as
burning of fossil fuels, commercial agriculture and industrial activities that has led to increased emission greenhouses such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs).
In order to save this planet from the wrath of global warming
and its associated impacts, we as human beings must carry out radical changes
including; completely abandoning use of fossil fuels, reducing use of chemicals in agriculture and planting billions of trees
to replace the destroyed ones and help in taking away some of these greenhouse
gases.
This blog will educate readers on various ways through which we can protect this planet from the impacts of global warming. In the next post, we will dig deeper into the causes of global warming.
